Did you find the manual was not helpful enough? I was confused about a lot
of things when I first tried working with it, but once I read the manual
through, it was much better. But the manual is not very organized!

So I would say, fool around until you can't get something to work (i.e. why
do I get red x's on my cables??) and then start reading the manual until
you get to the answer to your question. The next time you have a problem,
pick up the manual again. It's worked for me.

another good way to do it is to take some of the predesigned instruments
and take them apart piece by piece and figure out how and why they work
and what exactly they are doing.

You might try the tutorials by "computer music" here -
http://www.computermusic.co.uk/tutorial/tutorialmain.asp
Also the tutorials on the NI website. One important thing is to have
a basic understanding of a typical VCO/VCF/VCA synth layout as well
as fundamentals of midi. I started initially by simply trying to
design a single oscillator synth with a filter using; oscillator,
filter, envelope, gate module, pitch module, and then adding to it by
looking at other designs.
